What will you need ?
The first step of planning a marriage is to set a date and choose a celebrant who is available at your preferred time and location.
You'll need 2 witnesses over 18 years who are available to attend your wedding, so it's worth running through a few dates with some of your friends or relatives. People often plan weddings up to a year in advance as weddings really are special occasions so consider booking your preferred celebrant as early as possible.

Marriage in Australia is thankfully respected as one of your most important life decisions, so there are no surprise (Vegas !) weddings in this country. Therefore your chosen celebrant will help you fill in the form known as "Notification Of Intended Marriage" at least a month before your marriage date. Typically at your first meeting you will sign the notice, discuss your needs and the celebrant explains some important details to you. Allow around 30 minutes for a relaxed consultation. I don't charge for this.  

 
Identification documents are required as a matter of law and celebrants must view original documents before the marriage is able to proceed. All Australian citizens require their birth certificates and other forms of ID such as Passport and Photo Licence. Celebrants must be certain of the identity of the parties concerned.
Foreign nationals require Passports. Birth Certificates (with English translations) are also useful as they contain the information required to complete the marriage documents accurately.

Other documents are necessary in some cases so please call for details of these which vary for individuals. Requests for forms from various Government Departments such as State Departments of Births, Deaths and Marriages can take time and applying for example, for a Birth Certificate, will require you to present several forms of identification (and pay a fee), so don't leave it to the last minute.

Documents in foreign languages require engaging an approved translation services. These  processes take time, often averaging 4-6 weeks.

Once you have committed to a date and time, your celebrant will help tailor a ceremony that fits you perfectly.
